History of Androsterone

In 1935 Kenyon created a crude extract from male human urine. The primary component was androsterone - a male androgen.(1,2)

This was one of the first crystalline substances identified to have "male hormone properties".

They injected this extract into a group of dogs. Within 24 hours they found a measurable increase in nitrogen retention followed by an increase in bodyweight. Later, they found that androsterone retained other nutrients such as glucose, potassium, sodium and creatine. (1,2)

The term "anabolic steroid" was developed shortly thereafter - describing the action of inducing growth by saturating muscles with the biological building blocks.

The Son of Testosterone

For many years androsterone was considered the primary male hormone until testosterone was discovered from concentrated testicular extracts many years later. (1,2)

Although testosterone proved to be a more potent mass building agent, androsterone showed relatively potent androgenic and anabolic properties as it was an only 2 steps away from the most powerful naturally occurring androgen in the human body -Dihydrotestosterone (DHT). (1-11)

As bodybuilders have long known, strong androgens such as DHT produce a “dry” and “hard” appearance by drawing water from under the skin and into the muscle tissue - thus enhancing vascularity.
